Peanuts
Non took me on her bike to go get the rest of the things from the village today. Turns out, that no one was there at all, adn they were already put together in front of the house- he really is sick, and they are in chiang mai. I guess he's 80, and while I'm not super surprised, I also wouldn't have said that. My lesson today got cancelled, and I'll just have one a day, it looks like.. a lot less that I was anticipating, which is sort of nice, I suppose, but I also feel a little useless. I emailed Emmett to ask about the position at the Woman's Union, because I really do feel like I could do a lot of work with people who a)know basic English b) want to learn more, whereas here I just feel a little excess. I mean, I spend most of my time reading, writing, looking around, or on the computer when it's available, because people are busy teaching their lessons. But maybe I just need more time to settle in. I also realized part of why I love riding these motorbikes is because of reading Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenence. I would love to learn to ride one myself, and if I had one I would definitely spend my weeksend seeing the country that way. I already adore the landscape, and it's just terribly freeing to interact with it in that way. Side note- yesterday someone gave me a bag of peanuts, which was great, because I wanted a snack, although they were still moist and dirty, so I though, oh, they just must be fresh. Still, I didn't realize that I've never had a fresh peanut! They are purply, and mushy, and the inside of the shell is just this moist little layer of protection for it's seed. I think about them a little different now.
